Australia: home of the great fashion graveyard
Share
Australians love a fresh fit but maybe a little too much. On average, we buy 56 new clothing items a year, nearly twice the global average, and toss out around 23 kilograms of textiles per person. That’s ten times more waste than the rest of the world.
It gets worse: 93% of those clothes end up in landfill. That’s the second-highest rate in the world, right behind the U.S. So while we’re posting “OOTD,” our wardrobes are quietly fuelling one of the biggest waste problems in the country.
Every year, over 200,000 tonnes of clothing are buried in Australian soil, to give a comparison that’s about two Empire State Buildings’ worth of fabric we’ll never see again. Polyester, nylon, and other synthetic blends sit there for centuries, releasing microplastics and CO₂ long after we’ve moved on to the next trend.
At The Re-Edit Co, we’re here to rewrite that story. We help rehome clothes before they hit the bin: curating, styling, and giving pre-loved pieces a second life (and a much better fate than landfill).
Because fast fashion shouldn’t come with a body count and your closet deserves a conscience.
